Overview

The Cradlepoint 170873-000 USB to RS232 Extensibility Cable adds a serial port to Cradlepoint R920, R980 and S700 routers. A screw-locking USB-A male connector holds the cable to the router, and a DB9 female end with screw receptacles accepts OBD-II cables, J1939 cables and other serial devices. The 400 mm cable is rated from -30 °C to 70 °C and needs no external power on the RS232 side.

The Ericsson Cradlepoint USB to RS232 Extensibility Cable (part number 170873-000) adds serial connectivity to Cradlepoint ruggedized routers. It is a ruggedized locking cable that lets OBD-II cables, J1939 cables and other serial devices connect to the router. The data sheet names the R920 as the supported router. Cradlepoint's product page also lists the R980 and S700 as compatible, and the cable appears in the R920, R980 and S700 data sheets.

One end is a USB-A male connector with a thumb-screw lock, which keeps the cable attached to the router in vehicles and other high-vibration installations. The other end is a DB9 female RS232 connector with screw receptacles for locking. The DB9/RS232 connection needs no external power. With an OBD-II cable, the R920 gains OBD-II support. The cable also carries GPS data over the serial interface and supports serial redirect, so data from the serial port can be reported over LTE. The USB side runs at USB 2.0 speeds of up to 480 Mbps. DSR and DTR lines are wired in the cable but are not currently supported by NetCloud OS.

The cable is 400 mm (15.75 in) long and weighs 45.35 g (1.6 oz). It operates from -30 °C to 70 °C and from 10% to 90% humidity. It carries safety listings including UL/cUL/CB 62368-1 and CID2, plus regulatory approvals for the US, Canada, EU, UK, Japan, Taiwan, Mexico, AU/NZ and South Africa. Use of the cable requires a compatible Cradlepoint router licensed to an Ericsson NetCloud Service plan. Cradlepoint hardware carries a limited lifetime warranty for as long as it has an active NetCloud subscription. A data sheet is available for this cable.

Which routers is the 170873-000 compatible with?

Does the RS232 side need its own power?
