Overview

The Cradlepoint 170900-016 is the North America version of the 5G Captive Modem Accessory, Outdoor, built on the W1855-5GC. This outdoor 5G low- and mid-band adapter mounts where the signal is strongest and runs in captive modem mode. A controlling Ericsson Cradlepoint router, such as the E300, E3000, IBR1700 or R1900, manages it as a single entity in NetCloud. It delivers up to 3.4 Gbps (NSA) downlink over dual 2.5 GbE ports and is powered by PoE+.

The Cradlepoint 5G Captive Modem Accessory with W1855-5GC (part number 170900-016, North America) brings high-bandwidth 5G to sites where fiber is not an option or link diversity is needed. The W1855 installs outdoors on buildings or temporary sites for optimal signal reception. It then connects back to an Ericsson Cradlepoint router over Ethernet. In captive modem mode, the router acts as the controller, and NetCloud treats the adapter as a modem WAN interface with Smart WAN Selection, WAN Verify and failover/failback. Managing the pair as one entity also reduces licensing costs.

The W1855 uses an embedded 5G FR1 NSA/SA modem to 3GPP Release 16 with LTE Advanced Pro Category 19 fallback. It has 4x4 MIMO, dual 4FF SIM slots and Dual Connectivity for simultaneous 5G and LTE connections. Peak rates are up to 3.4 Gbps down and 550 Mbps up in NSA, 2.4 Gbps and 450 Mbps in SA, and 1.6 Gbps and 200 Mbps on LTE. Throughput in captive modem mode is 2.0 Gbps across two 2.5 GbE LAN/WAN switchable ports. Private network support includes CBRS Band 48.

The metal enclosure is rated IP67 with salt-mist corrosion resistance and a 135 MPH sustained wind rating. It also carries ITU-T K.21 lightning protection and operates from -30 °C to 70 °C. Four external 600 MHz–6 GHz cellular antennas with N-type connectors are included, along with a PoE+ injector and line cord.
