Overview

The Cradlepoint TAA-170900-016 is the TAA-compliant North America 5G Captive Modem Accessory built on the W1855-5GC outdoor wideband adapter. It mounts on a building or temporary site for the best signal and works as the cellular WAN of a controlling Cradlepoint router, managed with it as one device in NetCloud. The W1855 has a 3GPP Release 16 5G modem rated up to 3.4 Gbps, two 2.5 GbE ports, an IP67 metal housing and PoE+ power, and it ships with an injector and four external antennas.

The Cradlepoint TAA-170900-016 packages the Ericsson Cradlepoint W1855-5GC for captive modem use in North America. The W1855 goes outdoors where reception is best, and a Cradlepoint router inside acts as its controller. NetCloud treats the adapter as a modem WAN interface with the same Wireless WAN functions as an embedded modem, including Smart WAN Selection, WAN Verify and failover/failback. Deployment, management and licensing go through the router. This part is listed in the accessory tables of the E300, E3000, IBR1700 and R1900 data sheets.

The W1855 uses a 5G FR1 NSA/SA 3GPP Release 16 modem with LTE Advanced Pro Category 19 fallback, dual 4FF SIM slots, eSIM capability and 4x4 MIMO. Peak rates are up to 3.4 Gbps downlink and 550 Mbps uplink in NSA, and up to 2.4 Gbps and 450 Mbps in SA. Dual Connectivity keeps 5G and LTE connections active at the same time. The broad low- and mid-band 5G coverage includes n48 CBRS for private cellular networks. Captive modem mode is rated to 2.0 Gbps throughput. Cradlepoint lists AT&T, T-Mobile and Verizon network operator certifications, along with FirstNet Trusted, T-Mobile Connecting Heroes and Verizon Frontline Verified.

The metal enclosure is rated IP67, withstands 135 MPH sustained winds and includes ITU-T K.21 lightning protection. It operates from -30 °C to 70 °C. A single PoE+ cable carries data and power from the included injector. Four external 600 MHz–6 GHz cellular antennas with N-type connectors are included, and the Cradlepoint W1855 datasheet is available as a reference document.
