About This Device
The ATEL PW550 Plus is the step-up model in ATEL's high-performance outdoor 5G CPE family, pairing the outdoor-mounted cellular radio of the PW550 with integrated Wi-Fi 6. The design attacks both halves of the connectivity problem at once: the outdoor placement captures materially stronger 5G signal than any indoor gateway can achieve behind walls, metal roofing, or low-E glass, and the Wi-Fi 6 radio distributes that bandwidth to laptops, phones, tablets, and IoT devices without requiring separate access points.
Wi-Fi 6 (802.11ax) matters in this role because it handles many simultaneous client devices more efficiently than earlier standards, with better throughput per client in congested environments. For a small facility, yard office, or auxiliary building, the PW550 Plus can be the entire network: 5G in, Wi-Fi 6 out, with Ethernet available for wired equipment.
Deployment scenarios include small and remote buildings that need turnkey internet without an equipment rack, coverage-challenged sites where mid-band 5G will not penetrate the structure, temporary operations - job sites, seasonal venues, event spaces - that need both backhaul and user Wi-Fi from one install, and fixed wireless service offerings where the installer wants a single-device CPE.
Like the standard PW550, the Plus activates with a SIM on compatible 5G carrier service. Real-world performance depends on plan, band availability, and the mounting location's signal path to the serving tower - a short site survey at install time is worth the effort. If you already have indoor Wi-Fi infrastructure, the standard PW550 covers the same outdoor 5G role without the wireless LAN.
