Overview

The InHand Networks IR315-FF39-S is the North American LTE Cat 6 serial build of the IR315 industrial router. It pairs one RS-232 and one RS-485 port with five 10/100 Ethernet ports, dual Nano-SIM failover and a fanless, DIN-rail metal enclosure. It brings meters, PLCs and legacy serial equipment onto cellular networks, with Modbus RTU-to-TCP bridging, DTU transparent transmission and InHand Device Manager cloud management.

The IR315-FF39-S is built for sites where the equipment still speaks serial: RTUs, PLCs, meters, sensors and older controllers that need a secure path back to a SCADA or cloud system. This part number is the North American (FF39) LTE Cat 6 model, with LTE Band 66 and Band 71 support. The -S option replaces the default I/O block with 1 × RS-232 and 1 × RS-485.

On the serial side, the router offers Modbus RTU to Modbus TCP bridging and DTU transparent transmission over TCP/UDP, with domain name support. It also keeps per-port traffic statistics and TCP connection status for both serial interfaces. Five 10/100 Mbps RJ45 ports, each with 1.5 kV isolation and configurable as WAN, LAN or VLAN, handle the IP devices in the same cabinet.

Uptime comes from dual Nano-SIM with switching on signal, packet-loss or dial-failure thresholds. Cellular and wired WAN can back each other up in hot backup, cold backup or load-balancing mode, and VRRP and an embedded watchdog add further redundancy. Security covers an SPI firewall, DoS protection, ACLs, 802.1x and signed firmware. VPN options are IPsec (up to 10 tunnels, AES256-SHA512), OpenVPN, WireGuard, ZeroTier, L2TP, GRE, DMVPN and PPTP.

The IP30 metal housing is fanless and measures 127 × 108.2 × 35 mm at 454 g. It runs on 9-36 VDC with overcurrent and reverse-polarity protection. Fleets are managed through InHand Device Manager, SNMP v1/v2c/v3, an HTTP/HTTPS API, SSH or SMS. The IR315 Datasheet V1.3 and DIN-rail drawing are available for this model.

Questions buyers ask

What does the -S in IR315-FF39-S mean?

The -S option fits 1 × RS-232 and 1 × RS-485 serial ports. Serial and the 4 × digital I/O block are mutually exclusive on the IR315, so this unit has serial instead of I/O. FF39 is the North American LTE Cat 6 radio.

Can it connect Modbus RTU devices to a Modbus TCP system?

Yes. The IR315 includes a Modbus RTU to Modbus TCP bridge. It also includes DTU transparent transmission over TCP or UDP for other serial protocols.

Does this model have GPS or Wi-Fi?

No. GNSS comes with the -G suffix (IR315-FF39-S-G), and Wi-Fi models carry a -WLAN suffix. This part number has neither.

How do I log in for the first time?

Insert the SIM with the power off, fit the antenna and power up. Connect a computer to a LAN port on DHCP or a 192.168.2.x address, browse to http://192.168.2.1 and log in with the credentials on the device label.

What happens if one SIM loses service?

The router can switch to the second Nano-SIM based on signal threshold, packet loss or dial failure count. It can also fail over between cellular and a wired WAN link.
