Overview

The Ubiquiti UniFi 5G Backup (U5G-US) is a compact 5G RedCap and LTE modem that provides automatic internet backup for UniFi networks. It is powered by IEEE 802.3af PoE and connects to any UniFi PoE port through a single GbE RJ45 port. It offers up to 220 Mbps downlink on 5G SA, one Nano-SIM and one eSIM, and a 1.14-inch status display. A desktop stand, wall mount and window mount are included.

The UniFi 5G Backup is a straightforward way to keep a UniFi site online when the wired connection fails. It is a slim 5G RedCap device, 200 x 38 x 20.2 mm and 122 g, that plugs into any UniFi PoE port and provides automatic internet backup. It needs no separate power supply, drawing IEEE 802.3af PoE over its single GbE RJ45 port.

The modem supports 5G RedCap in 5G Standalone (SA) mode only. 5G Non-Standalone (NSA) is not supported. Where a compliant 5G SA or RedCap network is not available, it falls back to LTE. Peak speeds are 220 Mbps down and 120 Mbps up on 5G SA, and 195 Mbps down and 100 Mbps up on LTE. That is ample for backup traffic such as payment terminals, VoIP, cloud management and remote access. It covers 16 5G NR bands and 17 LTE bands through two embedded omni-directional antennas. Band n41 is currently not supported on the T-Mobile network for 5G RedCap devices.

It accepts one Nano-SIM (4FF) and one eSIM. A 1.14-inch status display shows the connection state at a glance. The included desktop stand, wall mount and window mount let you place it where reception is best. It requires UniFi Network 10.4.57 or later, UniFi iOS 10.35.0 or later, or UniFi Android 10.38.2 or later. The U5G-US is NDAA compliant and certified for FCC, IC, PTCRB, GCF, AT&T and T-Mobile.

What is 5G RedCap, and does this support 5G NSA?

5G RedCap is a reduced-capability 5G mode suited to lower-bandwidth connections such as backup links. The U5G supports 5G RedCap in 5G Standalone (SA) mode only; 5G NSA is not supported. It falls back to LTE when a compliant 5G SA or RedCap network is unavailable.
