Overview

The Cisco ISR 1101 (C1101-4PLTEP) is Cisco's smallest Integrated Services Router. It is built for small offices, clinics, retail sites and remote branches that need enterprise routing, security and cellular WAN in a compact chassis. It has four Gigabit Ethernet LAN ports, one Gigabit Ethernet WAN port and one pluggable interface module (PIM) slot for Cisco LTE modules. It runs Cisco IOS XE or controller-managed Cisco IOS XE SD-WAN.

The Cisco C1101-4PLTEP is the LTE pluggable model of the Cisco ISR 1101, the smallest form factor in the Cisco 1000 Series Integrated Services Routers. It combines routing, a four-port Gigabit Ethernet LAN switch and a cellular uplink option in one device. That makes it a good fit for executives on VPNs, small offices and branch sites where space is limited but enterprise-grade networking is still required.

For WAN connectivity, the router pairs one copper Gigabit Ethernet WAN port with a PIM slot. The slot accepts Cisco pluggable LTE modules from CAT4 through CAT18, and Cisco's CAT4 USB LTE dongles are also supported. The cellular modules add automatic failover between the primary and backup links, remote firmware upgrades over cellular, SIM lock and unlock, and dual micro (3FF) SIM sockets for cellular multihoming. When fitted with the CAT18 P-LTEAP18-GL module, the C1101-4PLTEP is listed by Cisco as a FirstNet certified ISR.

In autonomous mode, Cisco rates the ISR 1101 at up to 1600 Mbps IPv4 forwarding and up to 500 Mbps IPsec throughput (512B). It scales to 100 IPsec SVTI tunnels, 100K NAT sessions and 1K VRFs. In SD-WAN mode, it delivers up to 450 Mbps IPsec throughput and supports 200 overlay tunnels. Maximum single-tunnel encrypted throughput is 475 Mbps IMIX. The router has fixed 4-GB flash, a Micro-USB console port and a Type A USB 3.0 port for storage.

You can manage the router locally or at scale. Options range from the local WebUI to Cisco DNA Center in autonomous mode, or Cisco vManage in controller mode, either cloud-hosted or on-premises. The chassis measures 1.73 x 9.75 x 6.6 in, weighs 3.34 lb and draws a maximum of 21.8W from its external 12 VDC supply. It suits desktop or rack-mount installation. Which cellular modules work in the C1101-4PLTEP?

The PIM slot accepts Cisco pluggable LTE modules including CAT4 (P-LTE-VZ, P-LTE-US, P-LTE-MNA), CAT6 (P-LTEA-EA), CAT7 (P-LTEA7-NA) and CAT18 (P-LTEAP18-GL). Cisco CAT4 USB LTE dongles such as D-LTE-NA are also supported.

Does this router have built-in Wi-Fi?

No. Cisco lists the C1101-4PLTEP with no 802.11ac wireless LAN. It provides four wired Gigabit Ethernet LAN ports.

Can the ISR 1101 run Cisco SD-WAN?
