Overview

The Lantronix EMG 8500 (EMG851010S) is a compact 1U out-of-band edge management gateway for branch offices, retail stores and remote sites. This configuration has a 4-port RS-232 (RJ45) serial module and an LTE cellular radio. If the primary network is congested or unresponsive, it fails over to LTE and fails back automatically, so administrators can reach console ports on routers, switches, servers and PDUs. Access is by Telnet/SSH or an HTML5 web terminal, and it supports FIPS 140-2 compliant cryptography.

The Lantronix EMG 8500 Edge Management Gateway provides lights-out management where rack space is limited and staff are not on site. Model EMG851010S has a 4-port RS-232 (RJ45) device port module and an LTE cellular connectivity module. IT teams can connect to, monitor and repair network equipment through its serial console, even when the production network is down.

An integrated fail-over and fail-back mechanism switches the out-of-band path to 4G/LTE when the primary link is congested or unresponsive. It supports Private APN, VPN access, and public or private IP addressing. Network Performance Monitoring with IPSLA simulation traffic helps detect problems before they cause an outage. In-band connectivity uses two GbE RJ45 ports or two SFP fiber ports. Device ports run from 300 to 921600 bps with software-programmable reversible pinouts. Each port has 256 KB of buffering, and logs can go to local files, syslog, USB, SD card or an NFS share.

Security covers TLS 1.0 through 1.3, a packet-filtering firewall, per-port user permissions and remote authentication through LDAP/AD, RADIUS, Kerberos, TACACS+ and NIS. Encryption uses NIST-certified AES (FIPS-197) and FIPS 140-2 compliant cryptography (Certificate #2398). Remote power management controls supported PDUs and UPSs. Sensorsoft integration and digital I/O add environmental monitoring.

The chassis measures 8.37 x 6.60 x 1.70 in (1U) and runs on external 9-30 VDC power. It is modular: two customer-replaceable IO module slots accept RS-232, USB or Ethernet switch modules, and two connectivity slots accept LTE, Wi-Fi or dial-up modem modules.
