Overview

The Lantronix EMG851120S is an EMG 8500 Edge Management Gateway configured with eight RS-232 serial device ports and an LTE cellular radio for the Asia-Pacific (APAC) market. It gives IT teams secure out-of-band console access to routers, switches, firewalls and servers at branch offices, retail stores and remote sites. If the primary network fails, it can fail over automatically to 4G/LTE. Its 1U chassis measures 8.37 x 6.60 x 1.70 in.

The Lantronix EMG 8500 Edge Management Gateway is a compact out-of-band management appliance for branch offices, remote locations, retail stores and space-limited sites. This SKU, EMG851120S, is built with eight RS-232 serial device ports and an LTE cellular radio for the Asia-Pacific (APAC) market. It suits deployments in APAC regions. For North American sites, Lantronix offers the LTE Cellular version of the 8-port serial model, EMG851110S.

When the primary connection is congested or unresponsive, an integrated fail-over/fail-back mechanism moves management traffic to 4G/LTE. The cellular link supports Private APN, VPN access, and public or private IP addressing. Network performance monitoring with IPSLA simulation traffic helps prevent lights-out scenarios. Administrators reach console ports through Telnet/SSH, RAW-TCP or an HTML5 web terminal, with no Java or proprietary software. Each port holds a 256 KB buffer, with logging to local files, syslog, USB, SD card or an NFS share. Up to 15 users can connect per device port.

Security covers TLS v1 through v1.3, a packet-filtering firewall, and per-port and per-group permissions. Remote authentication supports LDAP/AD, RADIUS, Kerberos, TACACS+ and NIS. Encryption is a NIST-certified AES implementation, and the cryptography is FIPS 140-2 compliant (Certificate #2398). The design is modular: two front IO module slots and two rear connectivity module slots are customer replaceable. That lets you add RS-232, USB or Ethernet device ports, plus cellular, Wi-Fi or dial-up out-of-band options, as needs change.

The unit runs on 9-30 VDC external power and is rated for 0 to 50 °C operation. It weighs 3.0 lbs maximum depending on options and includes front-mid-rear mounting brackets. It can be managed centrally through Lantronix Percepxion for Networking. Lantronix publishes a product brief, quick start guide and user guide for the EMG 8500, and the manufacturer warranty is 3 years.
