Overview

The Cisco Meraki MG21-HW-NA is the North America model of Meraki's IP67-rated Cat 6 LTE cellular gateway. It has two internal antennas, one nano SIM slot and two Gigabit Ethernet ports. The gateway converts LTE service into an Ethernet uplink at up to 300 Mbps down and 50 Mbps up. It runs on PoE or DC power and is managed entirely from the Meraki dashboard, making it a standard failover option for small branches.

The Meraki MG21 turns a cellular connection into a wired Ethernet uplink for a Meraki MX or any other router. It is Meraki's standard backup-connectivity option for small branches. The MG21-HW-NA is the North America hardware SKU. Its embedded Cat 6 modem is rated up to 300 Mbps downlink and 50 Mbps uplink and supports LTE bands 2, 4, 5, 12, 13, 17 and 29 with two-carrier downlink aggregation up to 40 MHz. Cisco Meraki lists PTCRB certification, with carrier approvals from AT&T, Verizon and T-Mobile in the US and Rogers and Telus in Canada.

The two antennas are built into a sleek IP67 enclosure. That lets you mount the gateway on a wall, ceiling or pole with the included bracket, in the spot with the best signal, rather than where the router happens to sit. It operates from -30°C to 50°C. Power comes from 12 V DC or 802.3af PoE (10 W maximum), so a single cable can carry both data and power. Two Gigabit LAN ports support two separate downstream routers, which suits MX high-availability pairs.

The Meraki dashboard handles zero-touch provisioning, scheduled firmware upgrades and live cellular metrics (IMEI, ICCID, APN, RSRP, RSRQ). It also provides alerts, remote packet capture and searchable event logs. When idle, the gateway uses roughly 6 to 8 MB of data per day for dashboard telemetry.

Each unit is paired with a Meraki MG21 Enterprise licence (1, 3, 5, 7 or 10 years). The hardware carries Cisco Meraki's lifetime warranty with next-day advance replacement.
