Overview

The Cisco Meraki MG21E-HW-NA is the North America model of Meraki's IP67-rated Cat 6 LTE cellular gateway with external antennas. It converts an LTE signal into an Ethernet handoff through two Gigabit ports and delivers up to 300 Mbps down and 50 Mbps up. Two dipole antennas and an all-in-one wall, ceiling and pole bracket are included. The gateway is managed from the Meraki dashboard and serves as a failover or primary WAN uplink for Meraki or third-party routers.

The Meraki MG21E is a cellular gateway that turns LTE service into a wired Ethernet uplink. It works with a Meraki MX or any other router. The MG21E-HW-NA is the North America hardware SKU, built around an embedded Cat 6 modem rated up to 300 Mbps downlink and 50 Mbps uplink. It supports LTE bands 2, 4, 5, 12, 13, 17 and 29, plus two-carrier downlink aggregation up to 40 MHz. Cisco Meraki lists PTCRB certification and carrier approvals from AT&T, Verizon and T-Mobile in the US and Rogers and Telus in Canada.

The E model uses two external dipole antennas, which are included, on RP-SMA sockets. An optional Meraki patch antenna is also available. Because the gateway sits apart from the router, you can mount it where cellular signal is strongest, on a wall, ceiling or pole, while the router stays in the rack. The IP67 enclosure operates from -30°C to 50°C. Power comes from a 12 V DC supply or 802.3af PoE (10 W maximum). Two Gigabit LAN ports let two downstream routers, such as an MX high-availability pair, share one cellular link.

Management runs entirely through the Meraki cloud dashboard: • Zero-touch provisioning and scheduled automatic firmware updates • Live visibility of IMEI, ICCID, APN, RSRP and RSRQ • Email, SMS and push alerts • Ping, traceroute, cable testing, remote packet capture and searchable event logs

Each gateway must be paired with a Meraki MG21 Enterprise licence (1, 3, 5, 7 or 10 years). Cisco Meraki includes a lifetime hardware warranty with next-day advance replacement on the gateway itself.

Does the MG21E require a licence?

Yes. Cisco Meraki pairs each MG hardware unit with an MG21 Enterprise licence (1, 3, 5, 7 or 10 years), which covers cloud services, software upgrades and support.

Can I use third-party antennas?

No. The RP-SMA sockets are designed to detect Meraki's smart dipole and patch antennas, and Cisco Meraki states that non-Meraki antennas are not supported.
