Overview

The Cradlepoint R980 is a ruggedized 5G router for vehicles, transit and hazardous-location deployments. This TAA-compliant U.S. Federal Government SKU (TAA-MB01-R980-5GD-A) pairs the R980 with a 1-year NetCloud Mobile Essentials plan. The R980 has an embedded 5G NR SA/NSA modem with Cat 19 LTE fallback, dual 4FF SIM slots plus eSIM hardware, 2x2 Wi-Fi 6, two Gigabit Ethernet ports, active multi-constellation GNSS and an IP64 metal enclosure. The package does not include an AC power supply or antennas.

The Ericsson Cradlepoint R980 is a ruggedized 5G router and security appliance built for mobile, in-vehicle and IoT networks that have to keep running through temperature extremes, vibration and hazardous locations. This part number, TAA-MB01-R980-5GD-A, is the TAA-compliant U.S. Federal Government ordering option. It bundles the R980 with Wi-Fi, a 5G modem, two 4FF SIM slots and embedded eSIM with a 1-year NetCloud Mobile Essentials plan. The plan includes NetCloud Manager device management, software updates, 24x7 support and a limited lifetime warranty for as long as the subscription is active. The package does not include an AC power supply or antennas.

The embedded 3GPP Release 16 modem covers 5G NR low- and mid-band from 600 MHz to 6 GHz on both non-standalone and standalone networks, with LTE Advanced Pro Category 19 fallback. Peak rates reach 3.4 Gbps down and 550 Mbps up on NSA. The R980 is certified on AT&T, T-Mobile and Verizon. It carries FirstNet Trusted, Verizon Frontline and T-Mobile T-Priority public safety certifications, and it supports 5G network slicing with up to four DNN/PDN instances. CBRS Band 48 support also covers private cellular networks.

The hardware is sized for vehicle installation. It accepts a 9-36 VDC input with ignition sensing and ISO 7637-2 transient protection, and it operates from -30 °C to 70 °C. The enclosure is rated IP64 and tested to MIL-STD-810H shock and vibration methods, with Class I Div 2, E-Mark, SAE J1455, NFPA 130 and BSS 7239 ratings. Active GNSS tracks GPS, Galileo, GLONASS and BeiDou concurrently for location tracking.

On the network side, the R980 delivers 940 Mbps stateful firewall and IPS throughput, 20 concurrent VPN tunnels, up to 64 VLANs and dual-concurrent 802.11ax Wi-Fi 6. It also supports Docker containers on a dual-core 64-bit ARM platform, plus NetCloud Exchange and SASE add-ons for zero-trust and SD-WAN capabilities.
