Overview

The Fortinet FortiExtender 511F (FEX-511F) puts a dual-SIM 5G Sub-6 GHz M.2 module with LTE Cat 20 fallback behind your existing security stack, plugging straight into the Fortinet Security Fabric so the new link inherits the same policy, inspection, and visibility as the rest of the network. Five GE WAN/LAN configurable ports plus an SFP slot anchor the site's wiring, and 802.3at PoE PD delivers up to 25.5 W over one cable.

The FortiExtender 511F is part of Fortinet's FortiExtender line, built on the company's security-driven networking approach: connectivity and security are configured together rather than bolted on afterward. This 5G model carries a dual-SIM 5G Sub-6 GHz M.2 module with LTE Cat 20 fallback, so sites ride 5G where it's built out and drop to gigabit-class LTE where it isn't — no configuration churn either way.

The 511F is the F-series 5G flagship: Sub-6 GHz 5G for real-world coverage (not line-of-sight mmWave), Cat 20 LTE as a high-speed floor, and dual SIM slots for carrier diversity. Five software-configurable GE ports plus SFP mean it can be modem, router, and switch simultaneously. Four antennas support the radio system, and the 7.1 x 1.8 inch chassis mounts on a desktop or wall. The power adapter is sold separately — PoE is the typical install.

Management options fit both single sites and thousand-site fleets. A FortiGate can adopt and control the unit through Security Fabric integration, while FortiExtender Cloud provides zero-touch provisioning, monitoring, and firmware management at scale; FortiManager support rounds out the tooling. SD-WAN estates use the 511F as the 5G underlay that makes cellular a first-class WAN path rather than a last resort.
