Overview

The Fortinet FortiExtender 511G (FEX-511G) is an indoor 5G Sub-6 GHz wireless WAN router built on the EM9291 modem, with 4x4 downlink MIMO across major 5G bands. Dual Micro-SIM slots and a reserved eSIM provide carrier redundancy. Wired connectivity includes a 2.5GbE WAN port, an SFP/RJ45 Gigabit combo WAN port and three Gigabit LAN ports. It runs on 802.3at PoE and is managed through FortiGate, FortiManager or the cloud.

The Fortinet FortiExtender 511G (FEX-511G) is an indoor 5G wireless WAN router for enterprises that want high-capacity cellular connectivity inside the Fortinet Security Fabric. It fits branch offices, microbranches, retail point-of-sale, kiosks, factories and healthcare sites. It can act as the primary WAN, a failover link beside wired broadband, or an out-of-band management path.

The EM9291 5G Sub-6 GHz module supports 5G NR in both SA and NSA modes across 28 bands, from n1 to n79, including n41, n48 and n77 through n79. It also covers 31 LTE bands and has 3G UMTS/HSPA+ fallback. Four SMA connectors support 4x4 downlink MIMO on key 5G and LTE bands and 2x2 uplink MIMO on n41, with receiver diversity for better performance at cell edges and in buildings. GPS shares RF port 1. Two Micro-SIM (3FF) slots with intelligent failover and a reserved eSIM keep a second carrier ready.

The port layout suits multi-gig environments: one 2.5GbE WAN, one Gigabit combo WAN (SFP or RJ45) and three Gigabit LAN ports. It adds a USB 2.0 Type-A port, an RJ45 console and Bluetooth Low Energy 5.0+. The unit draws 13.8 W on average and 18.0 W at peak. It can be powered by 802.3at PoE on Port 4 or an optional DC adapter.

Fortinet rates IPsec VPN at 400 Mbps over cellular and 920 Mbps wired. Management runs through FortiGate and FortiManager, with cloud and on-premises options, VxLAN LAN extension and L2 tunnel mode over VLAN or CAPWAP. The 511G carries Verizon, AT&T, T-Mobile, PTCRB and ANATEL certifications and is FirstNet Capable on 5G.
